Running costs: what each electric blanket costs to run

We used the Ofgem energy price cap electricity unit rate for 1 October to 31 December 2026: 26.32p per kWh (Direct Debit, average for England, Scotland and Wales; VAT has been removed from electricity for this period). Your own rate depends on your tariff, region and payment method, so check your bill.

Cost = power (kW) × hours × unit rate. These are calculated maximums, not measurements. Uses the maximum rated power with both sides on full. Most people preheat and then turn down or off, so a real night costs much less.

Electric blanket buying guide

Underblanket, throw or heated duvet?

Underblankets go under your sheet and warm the bed before you get in. Heated throws are for the sofa. Heated duvets warm you from above. Most people want an underblanket.

Single or dual control?

For couples, dual control lets each side choose its own heat (or none). It also roughly halves the running cost if only one side is on.

Features worth paying for

  • Timer or auto shut-off
  • Overheat protection
  • Several heat settings, including a low all-night setting if the maker allows it
  • Machine-washable with a detachable control
  • Fitted skirt or full-width straps so it doesn't ruck up

Safety

Follow the manufacturer's instructions, don't use second-hand blankets, check for scorch marks or worn wires each winter, and replace blankets every 10 years. Electrical Safety First has detailed guidance.

Electric blanket FAQ

How much does an electric blanket cost to run?

Very little. At the Ofgem cap of 26.32p per kWh (1 October to 31 December 2026), a 120W double on full costs about 3.2p an hour. Most people preheat for 30–60 minutes and then turn it down or off, so a night usually costs a few pence.

Is an electric blanket cheaper than heating the room?

Usually, yes. A 120W blanket on full uses about a sixteenth of the power of a 2kW heater, because it warms you rather than the air.

Can I leave an electric blanket on all night?

Only if the manufacturer says it is designed for all-night use, and only on the low setting it specifies. Many blankets are meant for preheating only.

Are electric blankets safe?

Modern blankets with overheat protection are safe when used as instructed. Check them every year for damage, never fold them while on, and replace them at least every 10 years.

Can I wash an electric blanket?

Many can be machine washed once the controller is detached. Check the label and dry it fully before using it again.

Single or dual control for a double bed?

Dual control is worth it for couples who like different temperatures; each side heats separately and only uses power when switched on.

How we chose

We didn't test these electric blankets ourselves. This list brings together hands-on UK reviews (mainly Trusted Reviews, The Independent and Expert Reviews) and manufacturer specifications. We cross-checked them against current listings from UK manufacturers and retailers on 22 October 2026.

We ranked on how well each does its job for its size, running cost, noise or comfort, ease of use, and value at current street prices. Pros and cons come from what reviewers reported or from manufacturer specs. We left out models we couldn't find on sale in the UK.

Prices: RRP is the manufacturer's price from its own UK site, or its 'was' price where one is shown. Where none is published, we say so. Street price is what we found at named UK retailers. Prices change daily, so treat them as a guide.

Use of automation: We used AI-assisted research tools to help gather and organise information for this guide. Prices, specifications and claims were checked against the sources listed below.

Running costs are calculated from each model's rated power and the Ofgem price-cap unit rate, not measured.
